Buying from overseas or as a new resident

The bottom line

Check your residency status and get an IRD number before you make an offer, not during due diligence.

Who can buy residential land in New Zealand depends on citizenship, visa type and time spent in the country. Every buyer signs a residential land statement with the agreement, and getting it wrong is an offence. A new resident's partner can be exempt from the test but still needs an IRD number before LINZ will register the transfer.

Kiwis living overseas can often still use their KiwiSaver for a first home here. The provider just needs extra proof.
